HI Ladies and Gents.

Ive been asked to quote on a 22 sq metre L shaped floor , half concrete half wood Leg of L is wood. Ive been in and checked the floor still isnt laid and the builder is putting down what he always uses (weyrock and a thin ply (9mm)) cos all his other tilers tile on this) , (insert swear word here).

Anyway I expresses my concern to the owners and its up to them.

So, do I need ditramatting cos of the two substrates?
The tiles are 330mm ceramic 9mm thick.
How much addy and grout would I need bearing in mind ditra if required?
They require the tiles laying in a diamond or at least diamond in centres and square border

I reckon for me its a weeks work, im almost guaranteed the work as its a referral but dont want to overprice or underprice myself either.

Theyve found some cheap egyptian tiles but im trying to push them to another type.

Hi, Firstly have you asked your customer if they are willing to pay for the ditra and fitting?

Secondly, you will still need amovement joint between the 2 substrates, even through Ditra.

I use trimline for movement joints £10 per 2.5 mtrs, The thing is who wants an expansion gap in their house? A perimeter movement joint would be preferable.

Yes theyll pay for ditra or similar and a movement joint. I thought the ditra meant I didnt need a movement joint at the floor surface change?

I understand they will need them every 3 sq mts in general the tiles are under the kitchen units and il leave a gap filled with Silicon all around the room or a gap under the units and skirting where poss.

Extract for a Ditra PDF regarding ply and mixed substrates....

Plywood and Oriented Strand Board
(OSB)
These materials are particularly prone to
deformation under the infl uence of moisture
(or signifi cant changes in atmospheric
humidity). The plywood or OSB panels
used in construction should therefore be
exterior grade. In principle, plywood and
OSB can be used as backing materials for
Schlüter®-DITRA on both fl oors and walls
in interior applications. The thickness of the
panels must be suffi cient to ensure stability
in conjunction with a suitable supporting
construction. Attach the panels with screws
set at the required minimum spacing. The
joints must feature tongue and groove
connections and should be secured with
additional adhesive. Movement joints of at
least 10 mm must be left at the transition to
other construction parts. Schlüter®-DITRA
neutralises the stress occurring in the tile
covering and prevents the penetration of
moisture

Hope this clarifies.

Re: 20 Sq metre floor - HELP

OK im confused what do I need?

20 sq metre floor as pictured. Concrete and Wood.

I know flexi adhesive , what else ? Movement joint, is ditra needed ect ect.

Only movement joint you will need IMO in your floor is between the 2 substrates. Is the concrete new? You may get away with 9mm ply, it depends how solid the floor is that it is going onto. If it was me I would be looking at using Keraquick throughout and mix with latex plus for the timber section. Possibly a "cold" movement joint would be ok, but if you are working on a Diamond, then a "proper" joint may be easier to work with?

OK builder has used 22mm ply Now 🙂 I think. Its marked WISA-SPRUCE Structural 2+ BS 5268-2:2002 . (pic enclosed)

Concrete is old but very level , floor is at same level now. also has a sunken drain grate with inset for tiles.

So which movement joint would I need or can I use a Silicon joint ?

I always Silicon the edges or leave a gap under the skirting
