Mr Tea bag, I get what you're saying but that's from your point of view not being a contractor,
put the shoe on the other foot and you're now a contractor who's built up a good relationship withvarious clients, someone comes along telling you they can do this that and the other agree to do it, then let you down, its happened to me loads of times and it's cost me money, time and contracts,
tiling isn't my main source of income I'm a joinery contractor in the Nottingham area and I've worked for every national house builder, operating with in excess of 50 joiners pre recession, If some could give me the heads up regarding a joiner I was just about to take on telling me what they're really like and not what they perceive themselves to be, it would be much appreciated.

Trust me. . Out of spite. I'd like to name and shame.. out of humanity I won't. . The same guy won't be in a hurry to put himself forward again for proper tiling work.. I don't think there is an excuse. .. especially I can't earn money at this job... tbh that was an insult. . I'd preferred it, if he'd said ' I'm not confident, sorry ' ...

You need to be humble enough to learn in this trade, a good opportunity for the guy to earn some money and learn which is worth so much more. I'd be reluctant to pass on a 3 m2 kitchen splash to someone who I'd never seen there work. M3fitter, if find it totally unbelievable that you passed on this amount of work to a guy from here based on there posts I guess... Really why man? You also sound like you get your fair share of high end work so would have been a great contact for the tiler who wants to develop. I was in a very similar situation about 6 months in to my career and I can tell you, he will be feeling absolutely gutted. Failure is never an option in this game.

I know Charlie we all are, I've just done 60 sq mts of 120x120 cm tiles and it's backbreaking stuff, but we should all understand our limitations and morally it's wrong to accept a contract for which we have limited experience and yet commit others to expenditure, loss of earnings, and ultimately loss of future work.
There are too many chancers in our trade who believe they can fudge their way through work which should take years to fully understand.
